This has been an interesting tour so far, though unfortunately it’s been colored by the appearances of several protestors at a couple of different shows. In cases like this, it can be easy to get angry and let emotions take over – and of course, Jon has been encouraging a different response:
The story is starting to find it’s way to the press, and while we’re hesitant to bring too much attention to this, a lot of you ARE asking why people are protesting and what exactly is going on. I think the best explanation is to let the situation speak for itself. So with that in mind, here’s a video, posted by the protestors, from the show last night. Jon comes on the scene at 2:06 to bring them water and start a dialogue. We should also point out that Ike, Switchfoot’s tour manager, “has his back like a boss!” (To quote our friend Susie!)
I am personally of the belief that an online debate is never going to solve anything, but if you feel the need to comment on the video, please do so with respect and love. Represent the message of the band well. #lovealoneisworththefight
As I said, the story is finding it’s way to the media – LSU posted some photos of the protest, so click HERE to view the shots. I love this handmade sign below!
Radio 104.5 posted an article about it, and they seem as baffled as we are by the occurance:
Switchfoot are known as “the nicest guys in rock” for a reason…because they live up to it. Anyone who has been to one of their shows or had the opportunity to meet them knows they are truly charming, the sweetest, most genuine guys you could ever wanna meet. They are a band based in Christian beliefs but have made it their motto to welcome everyone. So who would protest a Switchfoot show? These guys…
Now I don’t know what “church” or “organization” they represent but true to form their frontman Jon Foreman responded with:
Here’s a review from the concert last night from our friend Patrick – DEFINITELY watch the performance of All of God’s Children.
I attended the Switchfoot show last night in Baton Rouge, LA and I just thought I’d pass along some media I got for you to use on your website!
First, there were a large, large group of religious protestors lined up outside of the venue before the show… it even got to the point where one guy wearing a sign got in a shoving match with one of the venue’s security guards. Police showed up and everything.
Also, Jon took the time to address the ‘elephant in the room’ during a break in the set:
For the aftershow, I got a good video of Jon playing Vice Verses…:
And a video of him playing a solo song “All of God’s Children” that he said he was going to probably release next year!
Lastly, Lifesongs.com posted an interview with Jon about what the bands been up to lately – listen below!
Jon Foreman from Switchfoot joined Daniel & Allen on the Afternoon Drive! Listen as he shares what the band’s been up to lately, including his thoughts on their new album and movie, Fading West, and what to expect at their upcoming shows in the area.
Check back later this week for our next tour update – with setlists, reviews, photos and videos!
