Whoa that’s so cool! Anyone else think that Jon’s eyes look green in the picture? haha.
Yeah!! His eyes are a sea-greenish type in this pic. I’d like to know what he’d tell his 16 yr old self–So proud of em!

I want to read this soooo bad!!!!
My Bible College got the issue and I read the article, but it was a few weeks ago, I remember he would tell his younger self to not worry so much about girls and politics.
I dont think there was much in the article that I hadn’t read before, he mentioned how there were some good and bad things to youth and young adults groups.
Great article!
Jon is so humble and insightful….a really rare combo for a successful musician today!
Jon always gives amazing replies to interviewers.
“I’m just a kid who plays guitar…”
Still young at heart!
I loved that line!
YES, YES, YES!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!
Fantastic article! I never get tired of interviews that include Jon or any of the other guys, even if I have heard their responses before. I just love hearing what they have say.
thanks for the scans, Emily – and kudos to the interviewer (Firestone) !
This feels like a particularly nuanced/mature interview compared with others – it’s great to experience a somewhat different tone in Jon’s words.
Dallas Willard, eh? I wonder what a conversation between he and Cornel West on these matters would be like…
I’ve worked with teengers for 15 years and have raised three, often utilizing a context of a youth group. I found this article quite thought-provoking.
Same. I’ve been a pastor’s kid my entire life and I’ve worked with kids for well over 10 years… I appreciated that Jon didn’t come across as overly critical, but more challenging conventional thought.
Amen there, Jeanna!
Wow, I didnt know that, Jeanna! Im a pastor’s kid also, but I work more with teenagers, and I really enjoyed the interview, but is not my favorite one. I wanted the questions to be deeper, but its a good interview. Yeah, what I really like about Jon and the band is that they really know how to reply, both in christian or non-christian media, and for those who expected Jon to point his finger and say “this is wrong, you cant do this…” sorry, he is not like that.
that’s awesome! fellow PK!
I sometimes get frustrated with this new trend in pop culture where it’s suddenly “cool” for christians to criticize church. It frustrates me because it seems like 90% of the people have NO idea what it’s like on this side of the pulpit. It’s easy to say the church is “trying to hard”, “irrelevant”, “too preppy”, “too shallow” but most people have no idea what it’s like to get up to preach a sermon – a sermon that you spent countless hours preparing – and to look out in the congregation and see less than half of your congregation there. It’s way too easy to throw stones at pastors. It’s much, much harder to BE a pastor.
So all that to say… I appreciate that Jon didn’t go that route. Maybe because he’s a fellow PK
I was the Youth Pastor’s Kid for a number of years, and I can totally relate to what you are saying. I got to see the other side for those years, watching my father have a true heart for these teenagers, wanting to see their lives changed, and offering himself to Lord to try and help that change. But so many of them never took it, and simply scoffed because he try to teach them about a true relationship with Christ. He didn’t try and sell God off as the one who is cool and trendy. He simply taught that God was real and loved them, and he wanted them to love him back. It’s so simple. Just start there, and build. Like any relationship. But it wasn’t cool enough, so I got to hear the criticism from these kids about my father, then hear their parents criticize him, and so on and so forth… so many people just don’t get it, and miss the whole point. They turn to, as you said, criticism of the church and everyone involved in it. And these are not people who are considered “non-believers”. And it’s frustrating, sad and heart breaking all at the time.
(sorry if I sounded like I was ranting. That was not at all my intention)
Well said. Its funny because I had this arguement with a friend of mine weeks ago. He shared The Drunk and The Hypocrite on facebook (yeah, that Jon wrote) and said “I recomend this for pastors to read” and I said “not only for pastors, but all christians”. Then, we started a discussion because basically he said that if something wrong happens to a church, is the pastor responsability. And I do not agree with that. As if the church is going to a crisis is because God is punishing the pastor. This is so wrong. We dont know God’s plans. Because I hear every sunday not only blessed sermons, but God’s word. The task of being up there on the pulpit is not for anyone, is for those who have been called. And many christians start to criticize the pastors and think “oh i have an opened and refreshed mind” like they dont need a pastor. As if the pastor-sheep is merely an analogy. C’mon. I loved how you said fellow PK! haha
This probably sounds silly but, when I first heard Switchfoot, I liked it. But then months later I searched for the Dare You To Move video, the one with the man against the crowd. I fell in love with the video, thats why is my fav version. So i searched for more Switchfoot info, you know, to find other songs, and then i saw they are christians! And I was like “really? This is too good to be christian music!” haha, sorry, I didnt know much about american christian music. But what really, REALLY made me keep searching for more info about them, to look for interviews, thanks LOBH for being my fav source, is that I found out that Jon and Tim were brothers and PK! Yeah, thats silly, but i totally related to them because of this. haha and I Am Who I Am, i totally get what you said. Maybe is what Jon said once “Christ will never be trendy”.
I’ve just got to say…that cover does not nearly do justice to jon’s eyes
Really excellent questions from the interviewer; it’s interesting how Jon goes from talking about “deity” at the beginning to really getting deep in his response to the last question. Switchfoot walks a fine line; a difficult line, but I have the highest respect for what they’re trying to do, which is to bring their music/message to as many people as possible. Thanks for bringing this article to us, LOBH!
I want to be humble like Jon Foreman.
Great interview!!
I have a random-ish question…
Jeanna – is there a section under Switchfoot that lists all of their official music videos?
Yep! http://landofbrokenhearts.org/switchfoot/discography/ and then scroll down
Thank you!!
Im not gay but i want to marry this man…
