Jon wrote another thought-provoking article for the Huffington Post, questioning our perception of “making a living”. Here’s a short excerpt below:
Re-appropriate is a word that I stole from my friend David Dark. He’d stolen it from a guy named Jeff Tweedy. It’s a good word to steal. In fact, of all the words I’ve stolen in my lifetime I feel the least remorse for lifting this one. Re-appropriate: to seize and reassign. It’s very definition encourages a theft of sorts. I suppose all of language works like that: taking anonymous words and making them our own. This enlightened practice of re-appropriation is unique to the human experience: We adapt within our situation to make the most of it. All other creatures are defined by their innate abilities, mostly untaught. A worm is not taught how to crawl. A chameleon is not taught how to change colors. A rabbit, a horse, a spider- these creatures are defined by themselves and their intrinsic giftings. We human beings are not like this: we bend, we learn, we invent, we change. Humanity has been making herself up all along. Making life. Making a living.
I would like to re-appropriate the phrase “making a living” to mean something larger than accumulating net worth in an online bank account. I’d like to suggest that ATM receipts and mortgage payments have very little to do with living or life or making life worth living. In my personal struggle to make a living, I’ve found that true success has very little to do with income or comfort. In fact, it seems to me that inconvenience, hardship and discomfort are my best teachers. It’s as though these horrible, wonderful moments where I realize my own limitations are almost exclusively the only ones that matter. So when I’m brave enough, I chase these awkward moments down. I write songs about them. I put my scattered thoughts online. Heck, I even seek therapy from time to time. Love, dreams, confessions, God, women — these are dreadful, awe-inspiring mysteries to me. They put a funny taste in my mouth. They give me scrapes and scars. And stories.
The best stories often come from inconvenient and uncomfortable places.
Like a newborn child, real life comes out painfully, awkwardly, delicately. As a pearl is formed only when the oyster is agitated with sand, the most important moments in my life were born out of friction. The art comes from the awkward ache. The knot in my stomach usually teaches me more than comfort ever could. The sculptor’s chisel carves away at the block to bring something new into being. In the same way, we hammer away at the world we’re given to bring something new into being. We re-appropriate the past and present to create the future — breath by breath.

How quickly I am lulled back to sleep! How quickly I forget. In one of my favourite Wilco songs Jeff Tweedy sings, “You know I would die if I could come back new.” Perhaps to be truly reborn death is not optional. Here’s a firsthand story about new life, it always starts at the bottom.

I was gonna go but it was like $50 and I didn’t wanna see the other bands. Plus they’re playing on the free night too.. Last year it was Superchick and they got rained out of more than half their show. Tell me if they play any stuff from the new album. Last time they were in AL they played Vice Verses
SF will be the only band playing on Wed. — from 7pm-9pm. So you wouldn’t have to hear the other bands (who cares about them, right
) but it would still cost you a good $50. Also, what free night do mean? I didn’t see anything about that on the AtlantaFest website. Enlighten me?

ATL fest is technically a 4 night event. You can buy one night ticket or 3 nights, either way you get to go see the show Wednesday night for free.. Well now that I think about it, it’s not free, but the Wednesday night show comes with your other ticket.

It’s a foot with switchfoot written across the top and a blank spot at the heel, i put it together.
This is adorable!!! I’m pretty sure that this is the VV cover, in which case, I think that this is great publicity for the album and as a dedicated listener of SF, I think that it is a brilliant way to introduce it!
Either they’ll reveal the rest through the begining of the week as out-of-propotion pieces (Really?), or just reveal it as a whole tonight. Everyone knows what it is. now that the emblem and Switchfoot have been revealed, the most logical conclusion is that their next post will be the whole thing. If they released Vice and Verses or just Vice Verses as a clue, it would already have part of that first piece in it. There should be another one around here soon, but I’m not gonna wait this long.

Sometimes a song that can sound like just a crowd pleaser can also have a lot of meaning… I also love the line “man-made never made our dreams collide.” Probably the strongest track on Oh Gravity album in my opinion.
Oh, my gosh! This is awesome! Even if this isn’t the album artwork for Vice Verses (I need italics!), it’s still awesome! I’m pretty sure that it is the album artwork, because Jeanna gave us the hint of “sharpie”, and it looks like sharpie to me. It’s amazing – great job Andy and Switchfoot!
I have a feeling that Jon’s Huffingnton post blog connects perfectly with the song awakening.
I really didn’t like Awakening that much untill I saw the music video. I think the video makes the meaning of the song a lot clearer. It’s also really fun to watch!!! I like when Jon starts playing to the Moose at the end of the video.
Yeah, I love Awakening! It has so much meaning to it and I also like the line “Man-made never made our dreams collide”. The song is a crowd pleaser but at the same time it has a lot of meaning to it, as do many of the other Switchfoot songs! And I really love the music video it reminds me of the podcast where Tim and Jon are playing guitar hero together and Jon doesnt even know how to play! This song is also what gets me out of bed every morning ^.^ G

Awakening is a great song. it can be viewed multiple ways, but i feel its a sort of ephiphany in a sense. like you’ve awakened to the idea of living for something greater than just the day to day in this life. living with a purpose greater than yourself. living for God.

Awakening is definitely a special one for me. I had the honour of playing bass live with them this tour.
But even before I had that privilege to do so, it was still one of my favourites. I feel like it’s a good song about living and being alive.
My favourite line is “I want to know that my heart’s still beating… I’m bleeding”. The whole bridge is just solid. I guess it links to the new song Thrive. It’s easy to exist and go through the motions in life, but being alive, bleeding and thriving is a much better way to live.

I knew it! I was looking at the pieces and I started thinking, “Hmm… they look like it was done with a black magic marker. The album cover must be a dirty looking canvas or something like that and the title of the album and band must be done in either a black marker or paint.”

1 – I really liked the cover, but do not know, compared with the old, I expected more …
2 – The Civil Wars rock! Since last year they just got me with his way of singing, dancing, smiling. They have a lovely way to make you love music.
3 – I think the “In ones and zeros” refers to the expression” leading zero “, that is despised, broken, rejected.
While not a cheerful letter, every time I hear this song I dance. rsrs. I feel an urge to scream and dance, I do not know why.
I remember the routine, and how it makes us inhuman, and drowned in something we do not know how to enter. I like the part that says I want to wake up kicking and screaming (…). Just to wake up, wake up the dream, the routine, to reality and act. I like that. It’s one of my Top 20
The simplicity fits with the new trend of album covers through. In the early to mid 2000s, the popular album covers were flashy, showy, detailed, and made up. Now the trend is to slap a random picture in place and call it a day.
It looks great, but I kinda wish they would have left out the logo. It just looks a little like it was stuck on there instead of like it belongs there. Idk, just my opinion.
Are you talking about the Switchfoot star logo/symbol? Because if yes, I sort of agree (and of course if not, then I don’t – I think that the Switchfoot text logo was incorporated very well into the design). I think that the star symbol would look a lot better if it was distorted or slightly destroyed, for example taking out parts of the edge with a brush or something, the brush being the same color as the “Vice Verses” text (this is Photoshop talk; sorry if you don’t understand it). But I don’t think that it should be taken out – it looks good. Actually, I’m surprised it’s never been used on an album cover before.
When I said it looks good, I meant that it looks good but it could be made better by doing what I explained before.
Yeah I agree with that… if the sharpie overlayed a little bit on the edge of the SF sign. Or if the SF sign had been drawn in to the original instead of photoshopped on top…
Yeah, that’s exactly what I was talking about. Is this the final product? If it is, then it’s amazing – but if not, and they edit the Switchfoot symbol is changed, then it will be impossibly amazing!

I like the kind if subtle symbolism in the cover! For one its pretty straight black and white, fits the title VERY well and the whole polarity theme. Also I feel like this album is reaching for something more raw and simplified much like the simplicity and kinda messiness on the cover… hmmm perhaps a better way to say it is to refer to was it Neals comment? About the album feeling like there was more space… i see that here it feels open
I am definitely excited to see the cover and I love it. It just shows that nothing needs to be perfect as long as it exudes perfection.
It’s gonna be one of those memorable covers because I feel that it really shows what is Switchfoot about. The raw-ness, the layers of sharpie to create the words and to show a Grammy winning band need not need to have an expensive, beautiful cover!

Haha yeah I was sort of thinking the same thing Gracie, I think the album cover is diverse from any other album cover they’ve made, which makes me think that could be what they were going for since they have said that the songs on the album are “different from what they’ve ever done before”. WOW AWAKENING IS MY FAVORITE!!!! Well that is to say that it was the first SF song that I instantly fell in love with……the message was just so true and pure, we’re awakening. I think that this song again, points to something bigger than ourselves and though we are not always at grips with it, we cannot escape the truth of the matter “Maybe it’s called ambition, but you’ve been talking in your sleep”
The bass in this song is also KILLER!!! So intricate and awesome…..definitely my favorite SF rock tune! <3

uhh…am I the only one that thinks the album art is terrible? I like the idea and simplicity, but turn the contrast up a tad bit on your monitors and you can clearly see the Photoshop edits within the sharpie. It is most evident around the switchfoot “star and bar” logo. Heck, you can even see where they used the paintbrush tool on some of the edges of the letters.
I sincerely hope this is just a rough draft…otherwise they will be mocked for such an awfully-unprofessional album cover.
no you’re not. for me just looking at the monitor from above does the trick – you can clearly see a digital paintbrush messing up the original lackluster drawing. to make this, all you need is 1. a toddler to draw for you. 2. a permanent marker. 3. a computer from 1997 with microsoft paint.
ok maybe that’s unwarranted. on the plus side, I think the kind of faded, torn apart look fits the title “Vice Verses” quite well. The music is what really counts anyway.

It was one of the first SF songs I ever heard and I loved it instantly! When I first heard the song it applied really well with how I was feeling about my life. I kinda felt like I was just going through the motions, not really doing anything with my life and when I heard this song I was like “Whoa! I need to fix some thing in my life!! I need to start living!” I just think it’s really important to live your life with your whole heart, holding nothing back. We only have one life and we need to make the most of it!
And personally I find the music video hilarious! 
I love the lines “The first star that I saw last was a headlight,of a man-made sky, but man-made never made our dreams collide, collide”. I always thought of those lines meaning that we as people are not “man-made” and People are who make “dreams collide”, not the things that we invent. I also like the lines “Maybe it’s called ambition, you’ve been talking in your sleep, about a dream” I just think that’s really cool imagery! Really I like the whole song though!

Album cover… very interesting! I was expecting something more… intricate, but it is very simple, but I like the black and white… the high’s and low’s of life, because that’s what VV is about!
As for “Awakening”, I haven’t listened to that song in a long time,but the other day I was in the car with a mixed SF CD (I have been listening to “Born Again” by Newsboys 24/7!) and I went to “Awakening” … and I turned the bass all the way up… and let it ring… and IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!

Yeah! Born Again is competing with Hello Hurricane for my favorite CD right now. I saw Newsboys on WinterJam, and even though I wasn’t sure how Michael Tait would fit in, I now know that he was the perfect replacement for Peter.
Yeah my brother saw them on that tour too and he really liked them! But personally I’m still not to happy Peter’s gone… I love him! He was the major reason I liked Newsboys so much! But Michael Tait’s good too…

I don’t really like it. I don’t know, it’s just all their other album covers were really sweet (with the exception of LOC and LTB, and they were still pretty good.) With New Way to Be Human we got a fingerprint, which tied in with the tittle. with TBL it was a bass guitar at the bottom of a weird looking pool, With NIS it was that tree thing. Oh! Gravity’s was probably the best, for obvious reasons. Hello Hurricane was a bit more simple, but still really artsy.
But the cover of Vice Verses, after Andy kept building it up on twitter, turned out to be the tittle written in sharpie. It’s not the worst, but for Switchfoot, it’s pretty dull.
I agree. I’m not really thrilled with it. I was hoping it would be a cool picture of the ocean. That’s what I always imagined it like! A picture of the ocean at night. A pretty dark blue, and stars and moon in the sky. This was kinda disappointing, I must admit. I like it when they do more complex stuff like TBL or NIS. I though HH was beautiful. This doesn’t actually seem to fit VV to me. Maybe when I hear it, I like it more or something.

I love the new cover but like some of y’all said i think they could have done better. I was expecting much more compared to their other amazing covers (OG, HH, NIS, TBL). But i’m sure their music will make up for the cover!
its a pedal! hence “switch” then “foot” pedals are “switched” on by using your “foot”
so the new cover is a bunch of sharpie? i do that kind of stuff all the time……not to mean that i dont like it, cuz i really really do…its just surprising….

You guys have a heck of community on here. There’s about 50,000 comments I had to scroll through. And I’m super excited now that I’ve seen the VV album cover! I have no idea what’s going on besides that, though.
