My good friend Job from We’re Awakening and I just got off the phone with Switchfoot’s management – and WOW. You guys should get excited. We’ve got all the latest info on the new album – the sound, the direction, the dates and the music! Read on for an exclusive look at Vice Verses.
First off, management says that they are hoping to launch what is the most exciting chapter of the band’s career – they’re hoping to take Switchfoot down the path of Coldplay following the release of “A Rush of Blood To The Head” and U2 following the release of “Joshua Tree”.
Here’s the scoop, neatly organized in bullet points!
- The band is taking their sound much more sonic. The album is almost along the lines of U2′s “Atchung Baby” – a little rock, but much more spacious. The new sound that was “hinted at” in Hello Hurricane is arriving full force.
- Mike Elizondo is overseeing the record. (He now works at Warner Brother Records and doesn’t have time to make albums like he used to, but Switchfoot wants him involved.)
- Neal Avron and Switchfoot are producing Vice Verses.
- The new record sounds like “Switchfoot on steroids”
- The album has more space – less music, less instrumentation, yet it sounds bigger. There’s more from the bass and drums. The guitars “bite”. Jon’s vocals are at the incredible vocal intensity that we’ve come to expect from him.
- There is a “groove” to this record.
- According to Bruce Flohor, this album will make people go “Damn THAT’S SWITCHFOOT!?” The guys have taken this a whole new direction.
- 9 songs are completed
- Dark Horses may not make the record – at first it was thought that “Dark Horses” would be the single, but the record is getting to be so GOOD that the song might not make the cut
- The guys will be recording until the end of Feburary, then they will head to LA to start mixing the album. They might write 1 or 2 more songs for the album if they feel that something is missing
- They’re working on the sound of the album as much as the songs
- No double record at this time. The guys are taking so much time to craft the individual songs (for example, the drums are very different on each track) that if they made a double record, they’d be in the studio for several more months. It’s a “very labor intensive” project.
- They want the record to make the live show better
- The album should release in June, hopefully around the Bro-am
- The “story of the album” will be told in April
- There will most likely be a music video for the first single
- There will be an awesome pre-order. The album will be recorded on vinyl. They’ll have some really cool additions to package with the album, not just “a bunch of crap”.
- It’s a COMPLETELY new sound for the band
Also here’s a timeline to help you out!
- February – Recording Vice Verses
- March – Head to LA to mix
- April – Touring Japan, Asia & Australia
- May – Touring Canada
- June, July, August – Touring the United States
- October, November – Fall Tour
Keep checking back as we’ll have more information coming as the recording progresses, and take to the comments to share your thoughts and reactions on this news!
Wow…that’s some great information! Seriously can’t wait to hear this one. And see their live performance to back it up. Thanks for the inside scoop guys!!
“They want the record to make the live show better.”
Is that POSSIBLE?
Haha, but seriously. AWESOME update, thanks so much for posting. See, this is why we love you guys- what other band would get us this kind of information as fast and detailed as this?
ahhhhhhh this is soooooooooo exciting!!! I get more and more excited every time I read something about it
June is not that far away!!!!!! So excited!!! I love that I found this website…you guys keep us informed…thank you so much!!!
Thank you Crystal! I hope you’ll visit often
Wowowowow.. SO much information! Love it, thanks Jeanna.
When they said it would be different, a new sound, people wouldn’t think it’s SF, etc… Did that worry or excite you? Do you think it will be too different, or just different enough to where we will all be pleasantly surprised?
i hope its not too different
Excited me! I’ve been waiting for a long time for Switchfoot to break their mold and reach for new heights – seriously, I wish you could hear how excited everyone is about this. I think it’s going to BLOW. MINDS.
Okay awesome, I was hoping that’d be the case.
I can’t wait to have my mind blown. Thanks again Jeanna!
To be perfectly honest, I’m a tiny bit worried. I LOVE the sound that was SO Switchfoot on “Beautiful Letdown” at that point, there just wasn’t anybody who sounded like them. “Hurricane” sounded SO GOOD, but “Mess of Me” and “This is The Sound” just didn’t say “Switchfoot” to me. *cringes from anticipated hate mail* Yes, those songs ROCKED, but it just took some getting used to. To be totally fair to Switchfoot, they ARE blazing new trails here. That takes guts! I just hope “Vice Verses” isn’t too much drastically different. Jeanna, do you know if any songs are for sure going to be on there? So far I’ve really liked “All of God’s Children” and “She Says”.
I’ll be sure to let you know as I get more details! I know I definitely want She Says and Thrive to make the cut, but we’ll have to see. They’re looking at the album as a whole, and since it doesn’t look like they’re doing the double record any more, those ones might not make the cut.
I enjoyed your thoughts, and you’re right, back then there wasn’t anyone who sounded like them – but now, there is. there’s a TON of people who sound like Switchfoot and unless Switchfoot changes it up, they could become dangerously close to “generic” territory – so I’m excited to see them try something new!
AAAHHHH!!! This is SO EXCITING!!!! XDDD I can’t wait!!! If VV sounds like Coldplay & U2, this is gonna be amazing!! I already LOVE all the songs they’ve let us hear live, & each song has already touched me in such a huge way. I think this is gonna be a really anointed album! They seem like they’re having so much fun & everything!
…. i am soo freakin excited for this now. i mean i was excited before and everything but now,,,, WOW!!
What?! Dark Horses not in the cut?! It’s an anthem and it’s not even out yet!
I’m not sad… to be honest, I never liked the lyrics to that song
agreed.
Am I the only one that teared up a little reading this?? I am beyond words excited. June’s gonna be my new favorite month.
no, youre definately not the only one
kinda disappointed
i was hoping for it to be more of a hard rockish type of record
hopefully it sounds like “a thousand suns” record by Linkin Park
I’m personally excited. I’ve waited for YEARS for Switchfoot to just break out of their fixed mold and try something new
linkin park?
yah they have that sort of electronic rock style
LOL
I honestly CANNOT WAIT! This is just amazing! WOOW!
Eeekkk!!
!! Wow! This really made my day!!
This is probably my years climax moment hearing such crazy Good News. Switchfoot, your so awesome.
According to management, this is going to make all the people who ridiculed you for liking SF going “Now I see”
I never really cared if people teased me for liking SF, All I could say was ” If only you knew how great they are, you would love them”.
haha, can’t wait to hear what they sound like!
That’s just ridiculous that anyone would be ridiculed for liking SF – gives me a good chuckle. Clearly whoever laughs isn’t worth their salt. Poor them, they know not what they’ve missed
I know I’m ticked at myslef for being a late bloomer and not even knowing of them til last year, but have totally immersed myself in all their past music and often times I’m left in awe. Countless amazing songs over a pretty long period from the same group. How they are not better know leaves me shaking my head. Just glad I’m one of the lucky ones now
It’s mostly because of their CCM past – pre-conceived notions and what not
oh man. i honestly don’t like it when ppl still try to label them as a christian band, DESPITE the fact that the guys themselves have said numerous times that they are “christians by faith, not by genre”, and that the music they make is aimed to “target where -everyone- is at”.
all those labels, christian music and whatnot, it’s just another way of saying that us non-christians or atheists cannot identify ourselves with the msg and meaning behind their songs – because our worries and problems are too mundane and secular to be related to the “holy msg”. but pain is pain, it feels the same despite what causes it; a realisation for life is a realisation for life, it doesn’t matter what path leads to it.
but don’t get me wrong, i don’t have anything against christianity, or any other religions. but labelling music based upon religion is just like saying it’s for christians and christians only, others should back off – while it’s the universal msg that connect us and ultimately bring us together.
i really like this tim quote that i saw a while ago from LOBH twitter: “It’s a very life-giving community experience every night: to be in a room full of strangers singing the same songs, and suddenly realize that we’re not that different. You have this commonality with people you’ve never met.”
i’m sorry if i am sounding like a shrew here, because it isn’t my intension to behave this way. and i am definitely not pointing my finger at anyone here for being rigid and close-minded, ‘cos i believe switchfoot fans are too decent to be like that. but it just really gets on my nerves every time i hear ppl say “it’s christian music because they’re a christian band!” – whether or not it’s switchfoot that they’re talking about (nevertheless esp when it comes to switchfoot).
If you get a chance, check out “Walking On Water” by Madeliene L’Engle – AMAZING book that talks about christianity and art… a lot of what you said reminded me of parts of the book
i just skimed over the book review in amazon, and wow, you are right, some of what i said did sound like what ppl wrote under review, and i never heard of the book until now.
but this book is so hard to find though. jeanna, do you or anyone you know happen to have scanner at home? ‘cos i think this book might just help me on my soc (media and society) research paper? if it’s okay to ask.
oh nvm. i found it at another library. yay!
Awesome! you are going to be so inspired
same here Liza, I became a huge fan of their music 3 years ago, and couldn’t believe that I hadn’t fallen in love with the songs sooner!!!
I absolutely agree, if you don’t like Switchfoot, you CLEARLY have problems, haha!
That’s some awesome news! I am intrigued. I seriously cannot wait until June…
Soooo stoked for the new record. Especially if dark horses wasnt good enough
Good point…
I never really liked that song, so i’m glad to hear it might be off the table!
awww, makes me sad to hear that. I thought it was really good live, but I thought that Dark Horses was really great BUT when they say that they’re making new songs that are even better then that, I can get on board with. If it’s not on VV I at least want to see on an ep or some b-sides. I like Coldplay a lot and U2 okay but I think they can be over-hyped at times so when SF gets compared to bands like that I can’t really see it in my mind but I guess when I hear it it’ll make sense. As far as all the other info, the word “pre-order” gives me goosebumps, and they’ve been getting better at cool packages like the holiday (calendar) and the deluxe version of HH so I’m really excited for…….well……everything actually!
I think it’s important to realize that they’re not saying Switchfoot will SOUND like those bands… but more they are trying to emulate the career trajectory that those bands enjoyed.
And yeah, they said they’re going to put together a really awesome pre-sale package and the FOTF are going to get some really good pre-sale bonuses too – good stuff!
ya ya, I can definitely get on board with the career part of it, if they get bigger though I hope that the band-fan relationship will stay the same, or if anything get better…..I need to renew my FOTF now that you mention that…
believe me, the band will always respect and value their fans – that will never change!
ah… i’d better get myself a FOTF before june!
that said, godd**nit, i need to get a job as well… *is scared of meeting new ppl*
Im not gonna lie. Im really nervous for their new sound. It’s a vulnerable act of them to make that much of a change right after Hello Hurricane for the simple fact that it got SO much success. Everything about that album was GOLD and they set the bar pretty high for themselves. Nonetheless, the guys always surprise us and kill it no matter what!
I’m excited – Hello Hurricane was SOLID, but it was nothing new, nothing out of the ordinary. I’m excited for Switchfoot push themselves
Everyone RT on twitter. It’ll be a tending topic I promise . @PeterRayM we are one !! #AMomentTogether
AMAZING!!!!…but…i am very disappointed about the Dark Horses issue…that is one of my favorite songs… :’(
I. am. so. excited.
I remember the first time I heard ‘Mess Of Me’ it was a different sound for Switchfoot. I love it when Switchfoot tries out new sounds. If all their records sounded like Nothing Is Sound (which is fantastic) it would be boring.
Also really excited for the possible June release date! (although, not getting my hopes up too much, especially after how long HH was delayed.)
It’s so great knowing LOBH. Love ya’ll for such great work! That’s some great info you’re sharing.
Thank you very much! we’re very lucky that the SF team is so supportive of what we do here
i’ve been trying to recall how i found out about this site, and i’m thinking i probably knew this site from drew’s “haning out with jeanna” podcast. i don’t think i found this site via wikipedia or the google search engine itself?
anyways, yah.
Ha really? That’s cool, I’m glad I gave Drew permission to post said video. That’d be a fun discussion point sometime – “How did you discover LOBH?”
ps: i meant “hanGing”, not “haning”. oh boy, i find that the more i look into my spelling – making sure i don’t type anything wrong before hitting “submit”- the more mistakes i tend to make!
I am very excited about this! I wonder when we will get another studio update, and if they will put up 30-second audio clips on their website before the CD is released.
My only question is: Who would WANT to ask “that’s Switchfoot?” when listening? Something I love about Switchfoot is their unique sound, and I hope that they keep it with this CD.
However, I still have high hopes for this CD… very high!
I totally agree about the sound that SF has, but I think that it is important to remember that it was Switchfoot’s management( Not Switchfoot themselves) that said that it was going to sound like “Switchfoot on steroids” and that “people were going to say, ‘oh THAT’s Switchfoot?’”
It is the management’s job to make people excited about the album, so I’m not gonna get too upset about Switchfoot potentially losing it’s special sound.
The guys have said it hundreds of times…..they make the music for themselves, all of their songs are really special to them, I don’t think that they are going to lose any of their signature style, at least I hope!
I’m sure that it will blow us away, like every CD previous has
I’m so exciteddddddddddddddddddddddddd!
I AM SO STOKED! This is gonna be so good! and as for Dark Horses possibly getting cut? I am excited because if a song that good gets cut the just think what is gonna make the record!
I like the way you think. The music on that song was dynamic
and, oh yeah, I really don’t care if Dark Horses gets cut as long as it makes way for better music.
Soooo excited!!! I can’t wait until Vice Verses comes out! Hopefully I get to see them in the summer and then the fall! Sooo sad Dark Horses might be cut from the album:( Was really looking forward to that one.
i love dark horses! and it totally rocks, kind of a bummer that i won’t make the cut..but that means that the other tracks rock even harder!!! so maybe, the guys could lay it down on an EP…exclusive track?? that’d be sweet (: thanks for the update (:
Great idea! Maybe it could come packaged as an exclusive with the CD
Yeah, kinda like an Oh! Switchfoot type of thing?
Yeah that’d be awesome! 3 songs would be enough
how about all the unreleased and hidden away Switchfoot songs?
JK that would be like a million CDs of stuff.
my bad, it*
HA, it’s kind of a bummer that adam won’t make the cut.
Maybe an EP with Dark Horses on it…. check out this pic
http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRkZrnSWP4lhQtYY_V1REYKtK_VelbWsB7a0w1TVr6LhS1yohX1gg
ha! there’s a literal take on the title
YEAH BUDDY!!!
whoaaa!!! SF on steriods is gonna be EPIC!!!!!!
Cannot wait to hear the new sound and songs!!!!
I’m totally pre-ordering!!!
Thanks for all of the info LOBH!
There’s going to be a great pre-ordering package I hear
whoa!!! Thanks for letting me know about that Jeanna!!!
I will be keeping my “eyes wide open”!!! =)
We’ll be keeping you all posted! Look for pre-order info sometime in April if they stick with their projected release date in June
i’m going to pre-order the cd too! so that means that i’ll have to get my membership no later than sometime or mid-march!
woohoo this is so dang exciting!!!! (not that anybody has already said that… lol)
If Dark Horses isn’t going to make the record, I’m wondering which of the others we’ve heard won’t make the record…I’m just crossing my fingers for Thrive and She Says haha.
So so stoked.
I’m going to try to find out…
And that is why you’re the best webmistress we could ever ask for. Grazie.
awww!
The only thing that disappoints me about this is that it probably won’t be a double album. I was really looking forward to that. Regardless, I suppose one normal length album of great songs is better than an album twice as long full of good songs.
The best Switchfoot concert I have been to was the “Evening With Switchfoot” three days before Hello Hurricane came out, and they had two sets: Hello Hurricane straight through and one song from each of their previous CD’s.
I am hoping that they will do something like this again for this CD!
Me too Kyle! Praying…
I do too! I never got to see them play HH from start to finish so I think it would be really cool if they did that with Vice Verses too.
I never got to see them at all on the HH tour… I was sad
Aww
Hopefully this time.
me neither. i really wish they’d add vancouver to their canadian tour this may, but judging from the situation, it is not likely to happen at all. i want one more HH tour (though with the introduction of some new songs) before VV fall tour starts.
My two cents on Dark Horses… I LOVE it! Would hate to see it go by the wayside. The first time I heard it, it was live at a soundcheck and it had me at first note. I think it fits the theme of dark/light of this album. As a matter of fact I think it encompasses both…The sound is a little melancoly/moody but the lyrics are about the light of surviving. It speaks of surviving and blue skies(light), but the fact that you have to survive something means there was something dark to get over…Best to them in their decisions. Tough stuff but I have a lot of trust in them and appreciate the variety of music they put out…they’ve never let me down before. I just enjoy the journey they take us on
personally… I love the song, and it to me reminds me of the good old days… With what they are trying to accomplish this time around though. i’m not so sure that this would be my first pick. Because i don’t really think it comes across as strong as songs like the sound or mess of me live. and if they want their stuff to be crazy awesome live… i don’t think this is it.
Maybe they can add a little something to it live like they did with Free
…just sayin’. With Free it seemed to grow along the way… they added a little more Drew to the mix just before the drum bashing and it kicked it up yet another notch. Would love that version on a cd.
but at the same time. I do agree with Liza.. idk just something more to add to the conversation lol.
I feel at a loss for words. lol. Except I am MUCHO EXCITED. yes. Sad that maybe SF won’t sound like the SF we know and love….but still excited.
And I agree with Musicgal, “improve their live show”??? huh??? it can be improved? xD lol!!! Ahhh this is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us.
I do have one question, though, Jeanna, if you don’t mind me asking…it’s been bothering me a long time, now.
We all know that spelling is not necessarily one of Jon’s strong points. (ha) At the same time, we also know that he likes to use wordplay in his lyrics. SO. My question is this: in the title “Vice Verses,” does Jon actually mean “vice verses” — as in song verses ‘about’ or ‘made of’ vices; or does he mean ‘vice versus’, which isn’t really the correct way to say that, anyway..it’s either ‘versus’ or ‘vice-versa’, which have two different meanings.
The song itself doesn’t help me much with context, at least. It seems most likely to me that he means what he says — vice verses, and is merely playing on the words it sounds like, to bring to mind the inner conflict that vice and sin bring. Vice makes you ‘versus’ yourself (conflicting desires) and God, etc; and since he has been singing ‘pairs’ of things, babies and hearses, etc, the vice-versa (‘and the other way around’) comes in, too…sort of saying ‘it goes this direction, and the other way around, too.’ All while saying he has his song verses about vice.
Okay, maybe I am just reading too much into it. Or maybe I am really dense and everyone else gets it. xD I now think he has his spelling right, but he’s doing a lot of wordplay there that can really make you think! Which is a good thing. I have always loved how he does that. Sorry if this seems like a silly question, I just would like your input!
Thanks so much!
Actually Tim is the one who is a bad speller (ehehe sorry buddy) – Jon’s pretty good… It’s correct – “Vice Verses” as in, these are “verses” (song verses, poetical verses) about his “vices” – clever eh?
hmm. what does “vice(s)” mean here? all i can think of right now is “vice versa”.
(bah-hahaha, tim’s a bad speller, that made my day! for the longest time i always thought that they all are good spellers, as bad spelling is for those lame artists these days *is mean*)
According to Wiki: Vice is a practice or a habit considered immoral, depraved, and/or degrading in the associated society. In more minor usage, vice can refer to a fault, a defect, an infirmity, or merely a bad habit. Synonyms for vice include fault, depravity, sin, iniquity, wickedness, and corruption. The modern English term that best captures its original meaning is the word vicious, which means “full of vice”.
so… “vice verses” = song verses (or just songs) about sins, faults. perhaps in a more comtemporary sense, racism, descrimination, crimes, violence, divorces, etc?
if so, that sort of reminds me of their “oh! gravity” song.
whack me over my head if i am wrong.
Whatever Vice you have – vice is a broad word, you’ll hear some people say “Biting my nails is my vice” and others use it in a more serious way – as you said, racism, violence, divorce etc. At it’s most basic, you could say it’s “verses” about his sins, his struggles, his faults.
OMG I’M SO EXCITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTED !
AHHHHHHHHHHH ! June *-*
hearing this makes me think of this…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKNX7HJkBRw&feature=related
unknown switchfoot song.
I feelings about Dark Horses have already been expressed by others. i am sad it might not make it but since there is that much better stuff, than it makes it all worth while.
these news just brought my excitement level up a hundred times. thank you so much once again LOBH!
no europe tour this year
If only they could come to europe… Czech republic or Slovakia, oooh.
But maybe next year, I still hope to see them soon.
I’m kinda scared about their new sound. I love HH sound. Otherwise, little change might be good. It’s just hard to imagine something new to me.
Well there did come to Slovakia last year, to you Lumen Festival in Trnava. Sadly I missed it. =/ I hope they come back too, I hear they liked it!
I cannot wait, this is beyond exciting. I knew as soon as I saw there were 75 comments on here within one day this would be monumental and I wasn’t disappointed.
I am very hopefully for this album. Personally I think this is good timing for some good changes and a testing of new waters. I hope they’re not afraid to dip their toes into some Radiohead.
I really hope it’s not just a “pleasant surprise” like an extra third half of a kit-kat bar but a revolution of music. I’ve loved Switchfoot and the “Switchfoot sound” but what’s great about Switchfoot is that they don’t have an identity crisis and they’re unafraid of trying something new. Eastern Hymns for Wester Shores was beautiful but it was short and they didn’t go far enough. My hope is that this will be that EP full grown into a record and fully into it’s musical maturity.
One of my good friends who used to listen to Switchfoot a lot says “Hello Hurricane sucked.” and as much as I disagree I can see where he’s coming from. Every Switchfoot album has been fantastic but they have all had that continual sound. I know my friend still really wants to like Switchfoot again and I hope this record will show the world that they mean business.
The count down until June begins! Approximately 116 days, ladies and gentleman!
Well said Michael, I feel the same. Switchfoot is an extremely talented band and each of the guys are insanely talented on their instruments… I’ve always felt like, as good as Switchfoot is, they’ve never QUITE reached their full potential – so I’m really hoping that this is the album where they’ll just blow it out of the water and really show everyone what they can really do
I totally agree. One by one they will conquer different sounds, mastering them and moving on album by album. x]
I’ve been on Lumen and I still have a post concert depression now.. that have been the very best performance in my entire life.. I’m so thankful to see them live. Everything has changed so much since last summer. I just miss them so much now..
i hope for that too because i have missed their last show in trnava
HH is a great album with a great sound but just like you said a little change might be good and i am really impatient to hear Vice Verces
hi holden!!!!
Holy cow! Feel like last one to a party! Soooo excited, U2 has always been my fav band because they constantly evolve and change. SF has taken over my top spot since HH. WOHOO!!! Thanks lobh you’re awesome!
Glad to be of service!
So when they say new sound hinted at in HH, what are they refering to? Sung It Out maybe?
That’s probably a good song to use as an example – there was a lot of space in that song, yet it felt full and lush.. I really think from what I’ve heard, that it’s just going to a lot more experimental… and not so “aggressive” in the typical rock way
THIS is when Switchfoot goes 100% mainstream and I’m not saying that in a bad way, I mean that not enough people know about switchfoot, yeah they’ve heard DYTM, and maybe a couple of songs off HH, but they haven’t really HEARD switchfoot!
Would it be too soon to say that Switchfoot will be the third biggest band in the world? Coldplay > U2 > Switchfoot? I think it’s going to happen!
Yes! Definitely!! In my book, they’re always 1st
For sure!
That would be PERFECT!
I could use more than one friend, besides the others that I made hear them.
I need the guys to be famous in Brazil, that would make my life so much easier!
“but they haven’t really HEARD switchfoot!”
yah good point. i’ve only mentioned to 3 ppl that i am a fan of switchfoot’s, but only 1 of them heard of the band and owned the cd (the beautiful letdown), and this person that heard of the band is a christian. (and i’m from vancouver, canada – you would think that now that we are so close to the usa and we get so many airplays on american songs/music, many of us would definitely have heard of the band. but no.)
not saying it’s a bad thing (that when you speak to any christian, they would most certainly tell you that they heard of the band and like them), but i do agree that there seems to be not having enough recognition for the band even if they’ve gone mainstream (in a good way).
I sure wouldn’t mind listening to Switchfoot songs on repeat on radio. Beats kesha any day.
Amen
This is AWESOME! I’m literally trying to stop myself from squealing out loud and calling all my SF friends right now from pure joy! I can’t WAIT!
ikr?!!
I want to cry. But in a good way! This is just too much!!! I don’t think words can describe the way I’m feeling. Every emotion you can feel, I’m feeling it. Paha. I can’t even begin to say at how exctied I am. I’m so overwhelmed with this amazing new newz, that I’m confused! And I’m dead serious. My mind can’t comprehend all this! Switchfoot on steroids?? GOOD LORD DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS?! We will all DIE after hearing the record. If we even make it through the whole album. I may die after the first song. I’M SO EXCITEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
ME TOO IM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!! CANT WAIT FOR VICE VERSES
Akeee!!!!! I’m so stoked ! I think I’m more excited for this album than I was for HH.
I wonder if this CD will have a few more songs than their average CD?
Awesome news! thank you so much guys! great job! everything sounds sooo excited! can’t wait for VV!
WoW!!! this is awesome news! yaaaaaaaaay VV is gonna release on june
my b-day is on june 8.switchfoot are so busy people
These are totally awesome news, a video! And it all sounds amazing, “Switchfoot on steroids”? Can’t WAIT to hear it!
But this all kinda worry me, some of the bands I love have really disappointed me when they tried to change too much, but well, I had never loved and respected any band like I do with Switchfoot, so I don’t think they’ll let me down… They’ll be flawless as usual. But still, how greater can they be? This kinda blows my mind.
I hope they make a VV tour in Brazil, that would be SO awesome!
Akee! This is breathtaking news!
“Groove”? As in, another shot at a jazzy pre-chorus? *laughs*
JUNE?! Wow, that’s really soon! When they said summer, I thought it’d be closer to August.
I’m definetly going to start saving up for that pre-order. And praying for some more demos like “Building a Hurricane”.
*gasp* Another fall tour! I know what I want for my birthday again. *grins*
same here, i thought the album won’t get released until end of aug or early sept.
ahahah! “We just tried a jazz ore-chorus on American Dream. It didn’t work.”
Management was saying the fall tour is going to be AWESOME.. then I mentioned Anberlin… and they did not deny it
i never been to any of their concerts, but i still have to ask: when was any of the switchfoot tours not awesome?
oh my goodness, if they toured together I’d have to take a semester off and follow them around…
lol it isn’t until now that i have realised i do come to this site often. i didn’t get an email notification for this post yesterday, but as soon as i was done my last midterm (before this reading break anyway)… like, 10 minutes ago, i came to the [school] library to use the computer so i could check this site out!
“•The album should release in June, hopefully around the Bro-am
•The “story of the album” will be told in April”
all the more reasons why i look forward to the end of school/semester!
this post simply takes my breath away…! i’m in love! i’m in love! i’mmm in love! *tries to use donkey’s voice here*
(jeanna, i think you could just join SF management team already! we are so up-to-date with what’s going on with the band because of you [and your friends]!)
ahaha thanks – that wouldn’t be a bad job! we’re lucky the guys care so much about their fans!
i totally agree with that, for the management to call you guys and talk to you is a huge deal and it says a lot about how much the band cares about the fans, gets us hyped up!! woot woot!
Exactly, and this is not the first time we’ve had these conference calls with management… they do this frequently
that’s so cool! AHHH so excited for April to hear the album story and tour announcements
lol i don’t know if their official board is just as active as it is here on LOBH, but i would vote for THIS fan community to be come an official one!
i mean, you guys are so up-to-date with every single bits of information – that switchfoot themselves often come here to stay informed. in fact they often know what they’ll be up to even before their management tells them. also, you guys do stay in touch with their management from time to time (and it probably feels like buddies with each other now). so might as well making this the official fan community or something like that!
but at the same time i’m also thinking, if this site becomes uber famous and huge, like much huger than it is now… are we gonna lose our closeness (not that i am close with anyone here ‘cos i’m still quite new. but i’m just sayin’)? as i think that it’s the fact that it’s a smaller community that allows us to be able to interact with each other, rather than selected few ones (although i have to admit i haven’t interacted with too many ppl here yet).
ps: for some reasons i have “we are one tonight” in my head for days. can’t get it out of my mind!
WOW 112 REPLIES TO THIS TOPIC… NOW 113
well, right now it’s 117. but make it 118 now!
Hopefully part of the reason that Dark Horses is considered being dropped is due to its somewhat weak lyrics.
Agreed – I really didn’t like the lyrics, Jon has written MUCH better
jeanna, i like how even though you are a fan of their, you can still be so honest when there are songs that just aren’t your cup of tea.
btw how long have you been their fan anyway? since pre-a-walk-to-remember? or post- that?
Well thank you! Don’t get me wrong, they’re definitely my favorite band, but I also feel that sometimes they don’t reach their full potential… but I love that they are always reaching for it.
I’ve been listening to the guys for about 6 years – I started listening to their music before NiS came out, though I first really heard about them through A Walk To Remember
well! i suppose there’s always room for bettering ourselves, right?
same here, i first heard about them, well, googled the movie then soundtrack then the band – after i first watched a walk to remember on tv sometime in 2005. i liked that dare song a lot, but back then i liked the sound more than the lyrics. the 2nd time that i came across the band was again, from that very movie, but i was still not a fan yet. it wasn’t until in december 2009 that i started to know more about the band – and that’s when i became a fan of theirs.
I’m always excited for new music. Switchfoot is one of my favorite groups. As for me, and the expectations I have for their new CD, I’ll just have to wait and see. I always love giving any good music the opportunity to see what I like about it, and what I don’t. I like to try to be fair with most music, but there is some that I really appreciate, and some that I don’t. I am excepting of bands that change the way they do things, because I think that change can always be good. Here’s hoping.
Wow. This is going to be huge. Vice Verses will probably be the band’s most experimental and artistic work yet. Personally, I don’t think that any album Switchfoot makes will be as close to me as Hello Hurricane, but I’m sure it will still be amazing

eehh oui oui, i just saw that under switchfeed on LOBH home page! =)
I was hoping see Dark Horses on this list, I really enjoyed the instrumental, anyway, as everybody is saying if it isn’t in the list the others are by far better… I guess hehe
“The band is taking their sound much more sonic. The album is [...] a little rock, but much more spacious.”
“spacious”… that kind of reminds me of the “making of” featured on the HH dvd, @ 18:49 – 18: 56, what we hear/see them… tracking a song (if that’s what they are doing in the video)?
“The new record sounds like “Switchfoot on steroids””
uh…? (i don’t suppose it means what wiki says, right? “A steroid is a type of organic compound that contains a specific arrangement of four cycloalkane rings that are joined to each other.”)
I can’t imagine their sound getting better, cause I love em so much now, but it’s Switchfoot–they know music, they’re not gonna let us down.
And I like the way it sounds like it’s gonna be, with the “spacious” thing. sounds like it’s gonna be awesome.
Basically what it comes down to is that though I can’t imagine how they can improve, there’s always room for improvement. And they know what they’re doing. I don’t see how they could fail.
PUMPED!
So exciting! New sound for SF!!!!
I hope it isn’t too different. I am kinda worried, I don’t want to lose that Switchfoot sound completely…I am getting super scared.
In all honesty, I am quite worried about all of this. For one thing, I love the fact that guys are so instrumental. To me, that is what separates rockers and musicians. Don’t get me wrong, I sure do love me some U2 and Coldplay. I love some arena rock every once in a while. But, I don’t know. Maybe I am just paranoid that SF is just conforming to what Atlantic records is telling them. Maybe I am I am just being paranoid about ” the (musical) man”. (As I am typing this, Company Car is playing very vividly in my mind.)
I am happy, though, that SF is finally getting the recognition that they deserve. I have been saying for a while now that SF is one of the most underrated mainstream bands out there.
I do have more to say but I think I will stop there.
To put it all into one statement… I am both excited and concerned. Only time will tell what will happen.

(Sort of) Off topic question:
What is the deal with the new Fiction Family record? I remember that the guys did good couple of ours worth of mixing. Is there any new info up?
Thanks for your comment Dustin! I should have made that more clear in the post, but management wasn’t saying that Switchfoot was going to SOUND like U2 or Coldplay, but more management is hoping that Switchfoot’s career will follow the career paths of those bands. It was more of an example, than a comparison! Also, if you watched the behind the scenes DVD for Hello Hurricane the guys were experimenting a LOT then too… really trying some weird different things, but they, for the most part, pushed those aside in favor of finding out who they were as a band.. they’ve established that now so now I think they feel they have the freedom to experiment!
As for Fiction Family, I believe they’re still planning on a spring release! As always, LOBH will keep you posted – use the tags and search info to find specific topics in our updates!
Right. Thanks for the clarification!
Like I said, I am both excited and concerned. But I tend to linger more on the excited end of the spectrum. (I believe my optimism is showing.)
Also, I’m not going to lie… I got really bummed when I read there wasn’t going to be a double album. I absolutely love the concept of Vice Verses and I thought that the double album would tie in perfectly with that concept. But, I do understand why there isn’t going to be one; so, it’s all good.

Thanks for the heads up on the Fiction Family record!
Same! I was REALLY REALLY hoping for a double album as well.. I thought it’d be a great step for the band to show people just how capable they are… but, as you said, I understand
is this the first album of theirs that won’t have a featured dvd alongside the cd? i have been thinking that perhaps they’ll put some other things in the pre-order package to sort of balance that (non-double dics) out?
I don’t know the specifics yet, just that they’re going to have some really awesome pre-order options!
And there is nothing about any tour in Europe. That’s bad. That’s sad. That’s not cool.
i’m not sure about the “in between albums” tour (b/t hello hurricane and vice verses). but as for their vv tour, i’m pretty certain they’ll go to europe after north american tour? so don’t feel bad, they -will- go to europe for sure.
Oh my word.
Switchfoot is a great band. They’ve put out a lot of quality music in years past. But Oh! Gravity. and Hello Hurricane both had little pointers toward how great they could be, whether it be the twisted grooves and ambiguous textures of “Dirty Second Hands” and “Circles” or the powerful arrangements and judicious dynamics of “The Sound” and “Faust” or the epic culmination of musical experimentation, melody, lyric, and arrangement savvy that was “Sing It Out”. There was always little hints of the band Switchfoot could be if they let themselves venture far enough out of the sonic cradle of The Beautiful Letdown.
My friends, it sounds like that band is finally going to emerge.
I’ve been looking for you to comment again – I’m always interested in your insight.
Perfectly said, I feel the same way. Switchfoot is an incredibly talented band, but I’ve never felt like they’ve reached their full potential… though, as you said, there were hints at what they were capable of. I’m hoping this is the album that shows what they can REALLY do
do u have a bootleg copy of the song vice verses?
Yep, head to our Media page!
