Hello friends,
my heart is heavy with this whole copy-protection thing. Many PC users have posted problems that they have had importing the new songs (regular disc only, not the dual disc) into programs such as Itunes. Let me first say that as a musician AND as a music fan, I agree with the frustration that has been expressed. We were horrified when we first heard about the new copy-protection policy that is being implemented by most major labels, including Sony (ours), and immediately looked into all of our options for removing this from our new album. Unfortunately, this is the new policy for all new major releases from these record companies. It is heartbreaking to see our blood, sweat, and tears over the past 2 years blurred by the confusion and frustration surrounding this new technology. It is also unfortunate when bands such as ourselves, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, etc… (just a few of the new releases with copy protection) are the target of this criticism, when there is no possible way to avoid this new industry policy.For mac users these songs should import seamlessly. We are told that itunes is coming out with a new version for PC users in early November that will be compatible with all of these new CD’s but in the meantime it’s frustrating for all of us. That said, there are a number of solutions (as is always the case with these types of things) for importing the CD into your itunes and ipod. We have compiled some of the easier ways below. I feel like as a band and as listeners, we’ve all been through a lot together over the past ten years, and we refuse to allow corporate policy to taint the family we’ve developed together. We deeply regret that there exists the need for any of our listeners to spend more than 30 seconds importing our music, but we’re asking as friends and partners in this journey together to spend the extra 10 minutes that it takes to import these songs, which we think you’ll agree to be our finest collection of songs yet. As a band, we’ve always been known for having the best fans in the world and I know that will continue for years to come. A month from now, I hope to be singing these songs together at a show, and the extra time spent importing the music will perhaps be forgotten, or at least forgiven. Thank you for your understanding and the continued kindness that you have always shown for five dreamers from San Diego, we love you guys,

POST ABOUT: Thoughts between tokyo and delhi
The few phrases that I have learned in japanese are rolling around in my head. The irony is that they roll better up there than they ever rolled off my tongue while I was in japan. I am at the back of a JAL B777 flying away from the land of the rising sun, chasing the sun east as we head to Delhi. I am taking a few things from Japan: a deep respect for the heart of a hospitable and mysterious country and a pair of wooden chopsticks. I really do hope to be back soon. The people who I met were incredible, beautiful people full of grace and subtleties. And subtitles. Subtitles would have been nice to have alongside of the subtleties.
And, I just had a thought… are we, standing still? I don’t mean that as some sort of metaphysical question, I mean are we, JAL flight 471 physically standing still in the universe? I think we might be. Obviously, not in reference to the world below us, but in reference to the sun and the solar system and such… is this making sense to you? The world spinning beneath us and yet we are beneath the sun, combatting the spin of the earth with nothing more than a few jet engines… yeah, I’m pretty sure about it now: Other than the yearly cycle that we make around the sun, and whatever sort of motion this universe and galaxy possesses, we, JAL flight 471, are travelling at 498 miles an hour in an attempt to stand still.
The guy sprawled out next to me with the dirty socks has certainly not thought all of this through… The indian child screaming a few rows up from me has not thought this through… However, the lady chewing her gum a few rows back probably has thought this through. She’s been staring at me the whole flight, thinking about the physics of flight and time travel. And then, oddly enough I start to think about telepathy. Maybe she is teleporting these crazy thoughts into my head with the chewing gum! Maybe even now she’s planting these crazy ideas; I mean, these are some crazy ideas!… she looked away when I wrote that down- Ahah! Yes! I’m on to her mind tricks. I will not be manipulated by anyone. I am a free thinker… Or I’m probably just bored…
I’m a big fan of tetris on these long flights. Did I mention that? oh yes, Tetris: four blocks in various iterations fitting together with a little bit of digital magic- this will satiate the mental faculties for at least a half hour. I get nervous just thinking about it, when they start to come down faster and faster! that’s when I get nervous. but nervous might be better than bored.
We actually had very little time for boredom in japan. Every second of every day was filled with interviews and radio and sound checks and photo shoots and… and I was grateful to be alone as I walked around today before heading to the airport. Japan was quite a bit more beautiful than even my high expectations. This morning was a gentle dance of color against the grey… Umbrellas floating through a morning mist, grade- school children laughing, talking, walking quickly by the business man who glances from his phone to the pretty woman with the nobel gaze. And thus, Shibuya spins toward tomorrow, in a gentle, peaceful, hush- with a few more puddles than yesterday.

Hi friend,
Thanks for the note. Ironically enough, I was hoping to make it to the jackson county fair to see you again. We’ll see what goes down, although, I have to say the netherlands is a good place for music as well, (no disrespect to the jackson county fair).So about the new tracks… hmmm, well a part of me wishes I could say that our music was formulated and planned out by brilliant, methodical minds who structure entire records out of themes that are independent of anything that has ever thought of before. In reality, most of these songs are simply the spontaneous ramblings of a man with a guitar who can’t sleep, trying to make sense of a broken heart in world that is upside down. These songs become my own life in a tune: relationships, fears, hopes, insecurities, doubts and so forth all set to the major and minor keys. But it makes sense that these are the songs that we’re proud of, the ones that we put on the record because those tunes are always my favorite songs from Elliot Smith or Nada Surf or whoever: the honest ones.
So at the end of our time as a band perhaps we will have only one song to sing- just one very long, rambling, eclectic song that touches on life, death, pain, sex, anger, joy, peace, politics, God and the other elements of a searching soul in the twenty first century. Maybe at the end of my life I will sing only one song, a song that has been refined and purified. A lonely group of notes that will be a sweet, sweet sound for an audience of one. Or maybe I’m still trying to figure out this broken, beautiful planet- writing songs as a way of therapy in the hopes of a better understanding of this existence that we call life. Either way, the lonely struggle for meaning and truth in the postmodern world is a subject matter that I don’t think I could ever exhaust.
Maybe the best way to look at this record is as the next chapter in a mystery novel: the same characters, the same setting and yet a few more clues come to life. Or maybe it’s a dark chapter revealing even more mysteries to be solved. I’m pretty sure you’re the only one who can decide for yourself; I’d be curious to hear what your thoughts are. Whatever the theme of this record it was only partly intentional!

Hello all,
Thanks for stopping by. We’ve seen a lot of great people and kind comments around here and it’s much appreciated, amigos.Well, my computer says january 4th 1970. I figure why fight it: here’s to a new decade of achievement in space exploration and polyester fashion. Yes indeed, 1970 is shaping to be a busy year for switchfoot. Here’s some of the news in our world. Last week the final track of the record, (“we are one tonight” a fairly new song that we tracked in the 11th hour) was mixed and on friday our record was mastered- the last step in the process. Either the nail in the coffin or the final stoke of the brush depending on whether you’re a glass half empty or half full type of persona… I’m leaning half empty today- you know, always hard to let a dead dog lie… brushes, coffins, water and dead dogs… that’s probably enough metaphors for one paragraph.
So I’m thinking we’ll have a song up shortly. It’s called stars. For me it feels like it leans towards a Gish type of sound. (I always thought that was a great record if anyone knows what the name means enlighten us all…). Anyhoo, we’ll have it up shortly and you can tell us what you think. POST ABOUT: welcome and other thoughts…
Hello and welcome to the our SF myspace page. My name is jon foreman; i play the guitar and sing and write songs and shop for groceries. We’ll be posting new shows and things from time to time here on this page. What’s new in our world you may ask? Well, we just finished a new record and drove straight from the studio (literarily) to a surfing trip in mainland mexico with a few heroes of ours. In the words of Jerri Blank, “good times.” I’m anxious for the bug bites that I acquired in mex. to begin to subside. I’m also excited to get these new tunes out into your ears to see what you think.
Seems like I go through a manic depressive reality of ups and downs during every record- loving the songs and then hating them and then loving them again. I heard sting say he went through something like that for his records and then I felt a little better about the process. Everyone has been asking what the record sounds like. I can only tell you that this is the closest we’ve ever come. Every record is only an approximation of the truth- only a resemblance of what Switchfoot means to us. I think whenever you do a self portrait that’s honest, it declares all these scars and wounds and flaws that you hide from yourself and others- those are always hard to look at. But honesty is still the best policy. And these songs are honest. During the making of this record I figured out that I write songs about the things I don’t understand: war, love, pain, God, women, fear, relationships… this is a record that sings it the way I see it, in a world where truly nothing is sound.
Whether I’m feeling up or down about the record I always land on the side of wanting to play these songs live- that’s the real place where the music test’s it’s wings. So we’re excited to go out and hit the road with some friends this fall. Looks like a quick tour of the states, a trip to Japan and a jump over to Australia and then a few more shows back up here- all before christmas. We hope to see you out there.

We were blown away by the effort that you made personally and encouraged by the support that we recieved from our community as well. This was truly one of the highlights of the switchfoot timeline and we hope to do something like it again sometime. Hello friend,
We just finished fighting the rain down here in georgia. I think it’s following me around… Rain makes you write all sorts of sad songs, and even though we all love elliott smith I’m looking forward to some sunshine.
Yesterday was unforgettable. I couldn’t believe it: looking out into the downpour and seeing so many people standing in the rain singing along. These songs mean the world to us so we’ll sing ‘em come rain or shine but really, that meant a lot to us to see perfect strangers soaking wet-singing along to even the new tunes.
I’m amped to start playing this new record live. I can’t wait! we’re looking forward to the summer festivals- attempting to dream bigger dreams about what a SF show looks and feels like. Memphis was an incredible chance to see a lot of our friends in the other bands, and to be reminded about what life is like outside of studios.
Thanks again for standing in the rain.

Wow, so much going on in the switchfoot camp, it’s hard to know where to start. Since we last spoke, we’ve recorded our favorite record to date, officially added guitar wizard Andrew Shirley as our 5th and newest member, had our world turned upside down by the hearts of South Africa, completed our first real Australian tour, shot a music video underwater, and that’s just the beginning. Currently, we’re finishing mixing our record, working on artwork, and preparing to host first first annual Switchfoot Bro-Am Surf Contest on May 14th, benefitting homeless kids here in San Diego.

hi all,
thanks to all the perthians who came to the show last night. Along with amazing friends we met last night I would like to point out another great thing: to step out of the club, walk a few steps lay down in the sand and look up at the moon. Pretty sure I found the southern cross.
We’re stuck in the airport trying to get to adelaide. Glad to be here down under even on three hours of sleep. I’m on the exhaustion plan of jetlag patrol: just stay awake till you fall over. I’m still testing it, working out a few of the minor details. I don’t know… seems to be working pretty good so far! Anyhow, I’m excited about these shows down here. Wonderful beautiful place with wonderful beautiful people. So after this we head back to finish the new record it should be out in at least a decade, more or less. I think all of you’alls are going to dig it… Definitely a jump towards a beautiful new sound.
Shadow. I think that’s my favorite one right now. A song that I want to move a little slower on, so we don’t screw anything up. I have this gratitude. Like someone who has just inherited something beautiful. It’s this detached perspective on this new batch of songs. It’s a distant admirer type of thing. These aren’t nessecarily the songs I wrote a few months back, they’ve become much bigger, much more meaningful somehow. Like someone else wrote ‘em and gave’em to us. All the more reason to move with a respect for the songs, as though they’re on loan. Anyhow, enough for words, I look forward to playing them for you myself in a few months… They’re going to mean so much more singing them in the middle of it all rather than my garage!, Last night reminded me of that. Anyhow, many thanks from west Oz.

It’s 2:30am in Philly. We’ve been hitting it hard lately… very hard! The road is long and worthy of resting for. But I just read a question worthy of response. First off, thank you for your compliments. I would love to speak to all of you in person as I’ve had some great conversations so far this tour and look forward to many more. To be honest, this question grieves me because I feel that it represents a much bigger issue than simply a couple SF tunes. In true Socratic form, let me ask you a few questions: Does Lewis or Tolkien mention Christ in any of their fictional series?
Are Bach’s sonata’s Christian?
What is more Christ-like, feeding the poor, making furniture, cleaning bathrooms, or painting a sunset?There is a schism between the sacred and the secular in all of our modern minds. The view that a pastor is more “Christian” than a girls volleyball coach is flawed and heretical. The stance that a worship leader is more spiritual than a janitor is condescending and flawed. These different callings and purposes further demonstrate God’s sovereignty. Many songs are worthy of being written. Switchfoot will write some, Keith Green, Bach, and perhaps yourself have written others. Some of these songs are about redemption, others about the sunrise, others about nothing in particular: written for the simple joy of music. None of these songs has been born again, and to that end there is no such thing as Christian music.
No. Christ didn’t come and die for my songs, he came for me. Yes. My songs are a part of my life. But judging from scripture I can only conclude that our God is much more interested in how I treat the poor and the broken and the hungry than the personal pronouns I use when I sing. I am a believer. Many of these songs talk about this belief. An obligation to say this or do that does not sound like the glorious freedom that Christ died to afford me. I do have an obligation, however, a debt that cannot be settled by my lyrical decisions.
My life will be judged by my obedience not my ability to confine my lyrics to this box or that. We all have a different calling; Switchfoot is trying to be obedient to who we are called to be. We’re not trying to be Audio A or U2 or POD or Bach: we’re trying to be Switchfoot. You see, a song that has the words: “Jesus Christ” is no more or less “Christian” than an instrumental piece. (I’ve heard lot’s of people say jesus christ and they weren’t talking about their redeemer.) You see, Jesus didn’t die for any of my tunes. So there is no hierarchy of life or songs or occupation only obedience.
We have a call to take up our cross and follow. We can be sure that these roads will be different for all of us. Just as you have one body and every part has a different function, so in Christ we who are many form one body and each of us belongs to all the others. Please be slow to judge “brothers” who have a different calling and thank you for reading.

hello dear friends!
rarely do we say anything truly intelligent so we usually keep our lips sealed. I’ve been home for a few days however, and so my closed lips have begun to separate, ever so slightly. I’ve been surfing every day since I got home. Tiny waves, cold water, still- I can’t help but have fun. It’s just good to get out into the water.
I’ve been working on revamping an older song for a movie and gearing up for a few final 2004 shows in the states. Then it’s off to the races for the new record, a few international dates, a surf contest and a couple other tricks up our sleeves. I do come by here every now and then and read things. I’m always honored to hear that our songs have become a part of your world. I am also honored that you would spend time on our site, writing things to us, means a lot to all of us.
I don’t take myself very seriously, though. So at times, I question the validity of the worth that is ascribed to my simple thoughts. It is time like these when I am reminded that we are all in this together, learning from each other. I’m here to learn from you. Like you, I’m always glad to read posts of substance when I visit. I’ll keep you posted on a new movement that we’re getting off the ground in the new year.

Please stop talking about the hair thing. I mean no offence, I just find that the stuff that grows out the top of my head is not worth much thought. What has everyone been reading/ thinking/dreaming about? What new band or idea is raising the hair on the back of your neck? These conversations tend to be a bit more eternal somehow… The music is what brings us all together here and these songs are life and death to me. Hair, quite honestly, is not.

Hello friend, There are many people who don’t understand what we are doing and I will forever disappoint people, (including myself). However, I take my music and my beliefs very seriously and would like to respond to your desire to see us “flaunt” our faith. The very beliefs that I hold deny me the ability nor desire to display them ostentatiously or in a showy manner. I want to be real! To live a live that is genuine. Dying daily to self and truly loving others is a lot more difficult and more authentic than simply talking about it on stage.
So that is what we’re trying to do: live rather that talk. Talk is cheap and the tabloids scream about it every day. You have one body whose members serve different purposes, so in the same way, we who are many form one body and each member belongs to all the others. How does it go? Something like: preach the gospel at all times and if necessary use words. We’re very open with our beliefs and we have been from the beginning. Thanks for reading and thanks for listening.

Ok so here’s the update,
we’re on a layover in between a 12 hour flight and a 6 hour flight. I haven’t slept since we took off. Had an incredible time, though, listening to music and trying to track vocals (quietly), in the middle seat. Hope of the States is a great band. We recently got their CD in London- great songs, especially if you’re into the doves and the like… Saw Blink at the airport in London and felt a little jealous: they’re flying home tomorrow for three weeks. Three weeks!!
And I got to thinking, I DO look forward to holing up this winter and making a record, but until then we have so many things to be thankful about. I’m itching to try out some new things on this next tour, can’t wait to watch the honorary title and the format every night. And so the domino days continue through Australia! I’m really excited to get to Oz. Can’t wait actually.
Anyhow, Malaysia looked incredible flying in: the mist hanging between the overgrown peaks stretching out fingers towards the sunrise. Strangely enough, one of the flight attendants for Malaysia Airlines had our CD. And weirder they played our song on one of the in-flight radio stations. And the sushi for breakfast was a bit strange too.

Hello Europe,
We’re over here in london trying to figure out the jetlag scene; I’ve been taking 3 hour naps whenever I can get my eyes shut and trying to stay out of trouble wandering around the rest of the time.
At dinner this evening we were eating curry and celebrating Todd’s B-day, recounting our travels over here. We started this tour at an amazing, little, dingy club called the metro. I think it was past boiling point by the time we gat halfway into things. 200 or 300 people crammed into a living room drowning us out with energy. SF fans are the best in the world.
I could barely breathe and here they are belting it out. Met some kids from Isreal that came all the way up to listen. Trying to talk us into heading down there for a few shows… I’m game.
Let’s make a record first! Even though we never played a note in france, we all agreed that our visit to paris was one of the high points during our europa tour. We’ve got to set up a show over there… Ile st louis was quite a place to hole us during the rain and the croissants aren’t bad either. From there we went on to germany. The time in Berlin was amazing: amazing new friends, (Thanks for the sing-along switchfoot christmas song in german after the show) I wrote a sleepless waltz early in the morning and watched the sun rise.
Amsterdam was next, I love the city, very kind people. Very laid back… maybe reminding me of Colorado or cornerstone… or maybe leucadia, right near home. It always amazes me when people are screaming out the words, this time halfway round the globe in a dutch accent. I believe it was a man from morroco was singing the loudest.
Thanks to everyone who has come to these shows over here- we are truly blessed to have your support. And a chance to start from the ground up. The alterbridge guys are among the nicest bands in the world and have been very good to us on every date that we’ve played with them. Many thanks. And so one more for the gipper: we play London in 17 hours and then shove off with many good memories to take along with us to australia… It’s like aahnold says, I’ll be back, so long friends let’s try the sleeping thing one more time,

Hi Ali,
Should be sleeping, but can’t really get back to it. The sky is the most amazing color this morning… and brightening every moment. I’m so glad to be back over here. We’ve been away from the land of “rain and ale and fish and chips” for much too long. Had a great dinner night last night at a pub across the Thames from the mr5 building. Getting over here reminds me of what a strange diverse tribe we humans are. Culture and psychology and thoughts about the human soul… maybe that’s the jetlag, and maybe not! I hope to do a tour the next time, and when we do Edinburgh will be high on the list. an amazing place indeed,

Thanks for telling us your story. I’m honored that our songs have played a role in your life. Best of happiness and joy to you and Nicole! Since I won’t be able to play at your wedding, allow me to share the best advice I was given about love. The union of marriage only works when both people involved are in it for the other person. This is a revolutionary thought for a selfish, needy person like myself- to sacrifice my wants and needs for someone else? That’s very hard to do. It’s not meeting the person half way, it’s giving all of you and expecting nothing back. There is only one perfect example of this type of love. So God bless your efforts in loving one another, and may your friendship continue to grow.

hi everyone,
figured this is as good a time as any for me to break in the new boards. I’m sitting in an airport in Dallas on our way to WA, waiting for our plane to arrive. Actually, Jon was probably misunderstood. We are most likely going to release at least one more single, maybe even two. We’ll let you know as soon as we decide on what the next single will be. Thanks for writing to us. It’s three oclock in the morning in Jackson and I’m just about to go to sleep. I’m sitting outside an empty coffee shop using thier wireless network. Today was crazy- three of my guitars were smashed by the lighting rig when one of the genie lifts failed. No one was hurt; that’s the good thing. This could have been an aweful day, instead it was just exhausting. So thank you for the encouragement- I appreciate it. I am reminded that I am a fool, a simple idiot who has been given so many things. Another day, another breathe… a chance to sing songs that are bigger than I am, to be filled with a life that is bigger than I am. I have so much to learn. And I have a lot to be thankful for. Hello Allison, Thanks for your letter. I’m glad that our songs have been a part of your life. Songs have turned my head around when I needed it so I know how you feel, and I’m honored.
I’m not going to pretend to know everything. In fact, I write songs about the things I don’t understand fully. (My dear abby career was never syndicated, you know.) My simple advice is to seek the things that last. Three or fifty years from now few of these things will matter. People are like rockets and right now you’re setting your trajectory. None of us live in a vacuum; rather, we are influenced by everything around us. Do not despair. Set your mind on things above. Do not conform to the patterns of this world but rather be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

I am home. That sounds amazing to me; yes, I am home! I’m still a bit wet and salty from a morning surf, pleasantly mello… still buzzing from last night’s hometown show. A dog barks, a phone rings, the refrigerator humms the next room over. And this is my impersonation of Odysseus, sitting here telling you about the Cyclops and sirens along the way. I can hear the 5 freeway from my house, lumbering past me towards the rest of the world- towards memories untested, other shows and radio stations. But for this minute I am home. Yes I am home. And I am thankful.
